EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Arlington Baptist College Patriots with a 14-3 victory in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game was called after six and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Broncs (8-0) are off to the second best start in program history. In 1979, the Broncs opened the season a program-best 9-0.
The Broncs pounded out a season-high 15 hits for the second game in a row, including a season-best performance by
Vincent Mejia, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Roger Bernal extended his hitting streak to 14-straight games, dating back to May 19, 2011, by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Patriots (8-15) scored in the top of the first against
Michael Zouzalik (1-0) for their first run of the series. Zouzalik settled down to pitch five innings, striking out two while allowing six hits and two walks.
The Broncs scored in each of the first three innings.
The Broncs loaded the bases with two outs in the first to set-up a
Mike McCarthy single that tied the game at 1-1.
In the second, the Broncs put runners at second and third with one out to set-up an RBI-single by Bernal and an RBI-groundout by
Brandon Roush. One batter later,
Chris Torres hit an RBI-single to make it 4-1.
The Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out in the third.
Derek Hagy drove in two runs with a double and
Shane Klemcke scored on a passed ball. Bernal followed with an RBI-single, and two batters later, Mejia hit an RBI-double and Torres hit an RBI-single. One batter after that,
Adrian de la Rosa hit an RBI-groundout and
Riley Goulding hit an RBI-single to cap the inning with the Broncs ahead 12-1.
The Broncs host Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon for a two-game series starting Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
