EDINBURG, Texas –
Beau Bernstein scored the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team's lone point in a 6-1 loss to the Laredo Community College Palominos, the second-ranked team nationally among junior colleges, on Sunday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Playing in the No. 1 singles position, Bernstein dominated the first set against
Jair Assuncão Neto, winning 6-0. In the second set, Bernstein found himself down 2-1 before winning five-straight games to close out the match and get the point.
Bernstein also won his doubles match, along with
Chetan Panditi, 8-2 in the No. 1 position, but the Broncs (7-7) dropped the other two matches 8-4 as the Palominos (5-4) took the point.
In the No. 2 singles match,
Ricardo Hopker breezed through the first set, winning 6-0, but
Bruno Kliskinic came back to take the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-2 to clinch the point.
On court number six, after dropoing the first set 6-3,
Sebastien Job played a tough second set before falling to Dinmukhammed Yessenkulov 7-6.
The Palominos took the other two singles matches in straight sets.
The Broncs return to action when they welcome Southland Conference opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
