EDINBURG, Texas – University of Texas-Pan American Broncs starting pitcher
Dusten Knight didn't allow a hit over his final six innings of work to beat the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux 10-5 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
At 7-0, the Broncs (19-7, 7-0 GWC) are off to their best Great West Conference start in program history.
For the third game in a row, the Fighting Sioux (2-23, 0-7 GWC) had the early lead as
Kyle Bolander led off the second inning with a home run. That was the last hit allowed by Knight (3-1), who lasted seven innings, striking out a career-high nine batters while allowing one run on two hits.
The Broncs supplied Knight with plenty of offense, scoring three runs in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
In the bottom of the third,
Vincent Mejia hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot off
Ben Clark (0-2), to make it 3-1.
Angel Ibanez hit an RBI-double in the fourth to make it 4-1. He later added an RBI-single in the seventh to make it 10-1, finishing the game 2-for-5 while extending his hitting streak to 15 games.
Roger Bernal went 1-for-3 with two walks to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
The Fighting Sioux scored four times in the ninth and got the tying run in the on-deck circle, but Edinburg-native
Austin Casas struck out the final three batters of the game to end the threat.
The Broncs and Fighting Sioux conclude this four-game series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 11:00 a.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
