No. 3 Women's Tennis Makes Quick Work of No. 6 CSU Bakersfield

HARLINGEN, Texas – The third-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team advanced to the Great West Conference Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 win over the sixth-seeded California State University Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday at the HEB Tennis Center.
 
The Broncs (3-12) will face the second-seeded Seattle University Redhawks (12-13) at 6:00 p.m.
 
The Broncs got off to a great start, as Malin Andersen and Suncica Strkic teamed to beat Julian Mannix and Estefania Limpias 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles match. Nancy Ramirez and Charlotte Hughes beat Cindy Sands and Blanca Garcia Izaguirre 8-4 at No. 3, but Dana Nazarova and Wanda Beguelin finished strong to beat Daniela Dimas and Veronica Dimas 8-6 at No. 2.
 
Andersen made quick work of Veronica Dimas in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Nazarova beat Daniela Dimas 6-2, 6-3. Strkic won at No. 5 6-2, 7-5 to close out the match.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
