CHICAGO, Illinois – Using a brand new starting lineup, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team pounded out 12 hits and scored in six different innings to beat the Chicago State University Cougars 9-5 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Brooks Field.
Inserted into the leadoff spot for the first time this season,
Roger Bernal, who hit second in each of the Broncs' (23-13, 10-6 GWC) first 35 games, went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
Derek Hagy, who had been hitting leadoff, moved into the cleanup spot and went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
Adrian de la Rosa, who had generally hit near the bottom of the order, was in the number five spot and went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Bernal finished the series 9-for-17.
With 23 wins, the Broncs now have their most wins since 2006, when they won 24 games.
The Broncs got the offense going right away, loading the bases with one out in the first to set up a two-run double by de la Rosa.
The Cougars (7-30, 5-11 GWC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Bernal hit an RBI-single in the top of the second to make it 3-2 Broncs.
The Cougars again tied it in their next at-bat, but the Broncs took the lead in the third on an RBI-single by
Vincent Mejia.
That lead held until the fourth, when
Jonathan Carpen hit a two-run double to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead.
The Broncs took the lead for good in the seventh on RBI-singles by Hagy and de la Rosa off of
A.J. Reyes (0-5).
That made a winner of
Luis Flores (1-0) who pitched five innings of relief, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
