EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind for a 4-3 win over the University of Northern Colorado Bears in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
With the Broncs (27-15, 14-7 GWC) trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh,
Roger Bernal singled and
Derek Hagy walked.
Vincent Mejia laid down a sacrifice bunt, but third baseman
Taylor Anderson threw the ball away, allowing Bernal to score and the Broncs to have runners at second and third. After intentionally walking
Iradier Hernandez to load the bases,
Cameron Tallman (0-1) gave way to
Jess Amedee, who plunked
Mike McCarthy to tie the game.
Riley Goulding then hit an RBI-single to end the game.
Bernal finished 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to .427.
That made a winner of
Jonathan Sa (3-2), who pitched his third complete game in four stars, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five in seven innings.
The Bears (22-26, 12-9 GWC) got on the board right away.
Ryan Yamane led off the game with a walk, move to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out double by
Adam Hilker that made it 1-0.
The Broncs tied the game in the third against
Chris Hammer. With one out, Bernal singled, stole second and moved to third on a balk. Hagy followed with an RBI-single to make it 1-1.
The Bears took the lead in the sixth.
Casey Coy led off with a triple and scored one batter later on a single by Hilker. One out after that,
Jensen Park hit an RBI-triple to make it 3-1.
The Broncs and Bears play game two of this doubleheader at approximately 3:48 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
