Broncs Fall to Northern Colorado in 14-Inning Game

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of Northern Colorado Bears 7-5 in 14 innings of game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
It was the Broncs' (27-17, 14-9 GWC) second longest game of the season.
 
The Broncs led 5-3 after four innings, but the Bears (24-26, 14-9 GWC) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game. Zach Zouzalik (7-2) took over for the Broncs on the mound, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings. In the 14th, however, Ryan Yamane led off with a double and Tony Crudo hit an RBI-triple. Casey Coy followed with an RBI-single to make it 7-5.
 
Zouzalik ended up pitching six innings, his longest outing of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
 
That made a winner of Jess Amede (5-3), who pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out one.
 
The Bears got on the board against Michael Zouzalik in the first. With runners at first and second and two outs, Colby Harrison reached on catcher's interference. Adrian Schenk followed with an RBI-single to center. Angel Ibanez bobbled the ball and then threw it away, allowing two more runs to score to make it 3-0.
 
The Broncs got one of those runs back right away. Roger Bernal hit a one-out single and Mike McCarthy hit an RBI-double to make it 3-1.
 
An inning later, Derek Hagy and Chris Torres hit led off with singles and were bunted ahead a base each. Shane Klemcke and Will Klausing followed with RBI-singles to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Hagy and Torres got on base to start the fourth as well. Hagy walked and moved to third on a single by Torres. A wild pitch scored Hagy and a two-out RBI-single by Klausing brought Torres home to make it 5-3 Broncs.
 
Torres finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
 
The Broncs and Bears play game two of this doubleheader at 5:00 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
