EDINBURG – Despite having leads in all three sets, including 23-21 in the second set and 22-21 in the third set, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team was swept by the University of Idaho Vandals 3-0 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 796.
The Broncs' (10-9, 0-3 WAC) last lead in the first set was 16-15 before the Vandals (10-6, 3-1 WAC) won 25-20. The Vandals won sets two and three by scores of 25-23.
Sophomore
Haley Durham led the Broncs with a match-high and career-high 15 kills while hitting .357. Sophomore San Benito alum
Kasey Sanchez recorded her second career double-double and first of the season with a season-high 10 kills and a 11 digs. Senior
Nycole Masaki posted a match-high 35 assists to go with 10 digs for a double-double. Junior
Shanice Faison made her first start with the Broncs, recording a season-high 15 digs.
Jessica Hastriter led the Vandals with 10 kills.
Meredith Coba recorded 32 assists and
Jenna Ellis had 21 digs.
The Broncs led by as many as three in the first set, as a Sanchez kill made it 15-12. After an Idaho timeout, the Vandals went on a 6-3 run powered by three
Katelyn Peterson kills to take the lead for good at 21-17.
The Broncs led by as many as four in the second set, going up 18-14 after back-to-back kills by Durham. The Broncs maintained the lead, going up 23-21 after a kill by freshman
Alisha Watson, but after an Idaho timeout, Hastriter came up with a kill and
Ali Forde and
Taylor Wilkinson combined on a block to tie the set. After an error gave the Vandals set point, Hastriter served an ace to put the Vandals up 2-0.
The Broncs jumped out to an early lead in the third set, using four kills by Durham to go up 5-2. Durham's next gave the Broncs a 13-9 lead. The Vandals scored the next four points to tie it up and took their first lead at 15-14 on an attack error by redshirt junior
Maria Kliefoth. The Broncs scored the next three to take a 17-15 lead, and then after going down 21-19, used a kill by Durham, a kill by junior
Krysta Freitas and an ace by Faison to go up 22-21. Idaho again called timeout, and after Faison served the ball into the next, Hastriter served up an ace to give the Vandals a 23-22 lead. A kill by Kliefoth tied the set, but a Peterson kill and an attack error by Freitas ended the match.
The Broncs conclude this four-match home stand on Friday at 7 p.m. against Seattle U. Admission is complimentary. Doors open at 6 p.m.
