Men's Basketball Falls Short at TCU

FORT WORTH – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball led late, but the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs closed the game on a 17-3 run to beat the Broncs 57-48 on Sunday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
 
The Broncs (4-8) led 45-40 after a layup by freshman LJ McIntosh with 6:35 remaining. Kyan Anderson hit a free throw, Charles Hill Jr. made a layup, Brandon Parrish hit two pairs of free throws, Karviar Shepherd made a layup, Parrish hit another free throw and Anderson made a layup as the Horned Frogs (6-3) scored 12-straight points to take a 52-45 lead with 1:30 to go. The Horned Frogs made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
 
Sophomore Shaquille Hines led the Broncs with 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior Justin Leathers scored 10 points. Graduate student Javorn Farrell scored eight points with five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior Shaquille Boga grabbed a career-high seven rebounds with four points and two assists.
 
Anderson led four Horned Frogs in double-figures scoring with 16 points. Jarvis Ray scored 12 points. Shepherd notched a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Parrish finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
 
The game was tight throughout, staying within one possession for the final 17 minutes of the first half and first eight minutes of the second half. The first half featured six lead changes and five ties. The second half had four more lead changes and seven more ties as both teams tried to gain separation.
 
The Broncs pushed their lead to two possessions for the first time with 12:04 remaining when a Farrell layup made it 36-32. The Horned Frogs scored the next six points to take the lead, but a Hines layup, a McIntosh three and another Hines layup gave the Broncs their first of two five-point leads at 43-38 with 8:02 left.
 
The Horned Frogs led by four twice in the opening minutes at 7-3 and 9-5, but didn't push their lead to two possessions again until Shepherd hit a layup to make it 49-45 with 2:19 remaining.
 
The Broncs complete this road trip when they visit SMU on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
