Men's Basketball Falls to UTSA

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 72-65 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 1,487.
 
Three Broncs (4-7) reached double-figures in scoring, led by graduate student Javorn Farrell, who scored 16 points with five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Junior Shaquille Boga scored 11 points with a career-high tying seven assists. Sophomore Shaquille Hines scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
 
Hyjii Thomas led the Roadrunners (3-6) in scoring with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc plus 8-of-10 from the line with five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals. Keon Lewis scored 20 points while going 12-for-12 from the line with five rebounds and five assists. Phillip Jones narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
 
The game was tight early, as the Broncs were within 13-9 in the opening seven minutes, but Thomas and Lewis bookended an 8-0 Roadrunners run with three-pointers to make it 21-9 with 10:58 remaining in the first half. An LJ McIntosh jumper sparked a 7-0 run for the Broncs, who got as close as 31-28 on a Hines dunk with 1:27 left in the half.
 
The Broncs got close several times during the second half, but every time the Broncs climbed to within one possession, the Roadrunners responded.
 
The Broncs were within three after a good free throw by Farrell in the opening seconds of the second, but the Roadrunners scored the next six points to go up 39-30.
 
The Broncs pulled within three on a three-pointer by Farrell with 14:19 remaining, but a layup by Thomas and free throws by Devon Agusi pushed the Roadrunners lead to seven. Their lead swelled up to 11 before the Broncs again pulled as close as two at 59-57 with 3:19 left on a pair of Farrell free throws, but the Roadrunners responded with an 8-2 run to put the game out of reach.
 
The Broncs visit TCU on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on Fox Sports Southwest.
