EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team fell to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin Cajuns 2-5 in their home opener on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Juliette Clement and Melissa Burckhartt beat Lucie Chrastecka and Wanda Beguelin 8-5 at No. 3 to give the Ragin Cajuns (1-2) a 1-0 lead in doubles. The Broncs (0-6), however, had a chance to take the point, leading 7-6 at both No. 1 and No. 2 before the Ragin Cajuns forced tiebreakers. Nicole Breaux and Bailey VanDyke clinched the point by beating Anastasia Burobina and Reegan Greenwood 8-7 (7-3) at No. 1. Sophie Van den Aarssen and Hannah Appleyard followed by completing the sweep with an 8-7 (7-3) win over Didi Fatchikova and Dana Nazarova at No. 2.
 
The Broncs fell behind 0-2 after Chrastecka was forced to retire due to injury at No. 5, but Beguelin beat Burckhartt 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 to make it 1-2. VanDyke and Van den Aarssen responded with wins over Manon Lavrijssen and Nazarova at No. 3 and No. 1, the latter of which went three sets, to clinch the victory.
 
The Broncs' other point came courtesy of Greenwood, who beat Appleyard 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6.
 
The Broncs are back in action when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Tuesday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
