CHICAGO, Illinois – The second-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the third-seeded and host Chicago State University Cougars 63-55 in the Great West Conference Tournament Semifinals on Friday at Jones Convocation Center.
Brandon Provost led the Broncs (16-16) with 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, plus 6-of-9 from the line with seven rebounds. Provost finishes his career 12
th in program history in scoring (1,252 points), second in three-point shooting (.452), third in three-pointers made (233), fourth in three-pointers attempted (516) and sixth in minutes played (2,994).
Aaron Urbanus scored 12 points with two assists, three rebounds and one block in 36 minutes. He finishes his career as the Broncs' all-time leader in minutes played (3,481), despite originally joining the team as a walk-on, while also ranking 11
th in scoring (1,259 points), second in three-pointers made (238), third in three-pointers attempted (627), sixth in three-point shooting (.380) and 10
th in assists (305).
Nate Duhon led the Cougars (10-21) with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Matt Ross scored eight points with 10 rebounds.
The Broncs went 23-for-33 (.697) from the line while the Cougars were 19-for-25 (.760). Both teams hit six three-pointers, the Broncs in 16 attempts and the Cougars in 15. The Cougars, however, went 19-for-51 (.373) from the field while the Broncs were 13-for-36 (.361).
The Cougars jumped out to a 10-2 lead thanks in part to a pair of
Quinton Pippen three-pointers.
Jamal Dantzler responded with a three to spark a 14-6 run over the next 10:47 to tie the game at 16-16 on a
Shaquille Hines layup.
The game stayed tight until midway in the second half, when the Cougars used a 12-4 run to take a 44-32 lead on a
Clarke Rosenberg layup with 9:15 remaining.
