GARDEN CITY, New York – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team opened Great West Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from the New York Institute of Technology Bears, 5-0 in game one and 7-3 in game two on Saturday at Adelphi University's William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
Broncs (11-14, 2-0 GWC) starter
Sam Street (6-1) pitched his second shutout of the season while finishing his fourth complete game, going seven innings and striking out eight while scattering three hits and one walk.
The Broncs got the only run they needed in the third when
Riley Goulding scored on an error to make it 1-0.
Chris Torres got the Broncs another run in the fourth with hit first of three RBI when he hit a sacrifice fly. The Broncs scored three in the fifth to put the game away.
The first three runs score against
Jimmy Bulva (1-4), who allowed three hits and four walks while striking out three in four and two-thirds innings.
The Bears (2-21, 0-2 GWC) got off to a good start in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead over the first there innings. The Broncs scored twice to tie in the fourth and then the teams traded runs in the sixth to keep the game tied, now at 3-3.
That's how the game stayed until the ninth, when the Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out.
Will Klausing hit an RBI-single to give the Broncs the lead,
Alex Howe followed with a two-run single and
Dillon Engelhart capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Klausing finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Preston Budziszewski (1-0) picked up his first-career win, pitching a perfect eight and striking out one.
The loss went to
Steve Cotov (0-1), who allowed the first two of the Broncs' four ninth inning runs.
The Broncs and Bears complete this four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Suffolk County Community College.
