White Rallies Late to Complete Green & White World Series Sweep

EDINBURG – The White team scored six unanswered runs over the final five innings to come from behind and beat the Green team 6-3 in eight innings in game two of the Green & White World Series, complete the series sweep and clinch the steak series on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The White team will get to eat steaks, served to them by the Green team, which will eat hamburgers, at a team barbeque later in the spring, after winning the steak series 2-1. The White team also won the obstacle course while the Green team earned its point with a higher fall GPA.

Down 3-0 after three innings, the White team scratched across its first run off junior Blake English with two outs in the fourth. Sophomore Bryan Ramirez worked a walk and junior Jesus Garcia was plunked to move Ramirez into scoring position. Redshirt junior Lee Rios followed with an RBI-double to make it 3-1.

That was it against English, who went four innings, allowing just one other hit while striking out five.

The White team got another run back in the fifth. Redshirt senior Jonathan Garza and senior Alex Howe led off with singles and moved up a base each on a balk by junior Logan Landon. Freshman Victor Garcia Jr. followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 3-2.

Garza led off the seventh with a single against senior Matt Daniels. He moved to second and third on wild pitches, and then, with two outs, scored on a passed ball to tie the game.

Before the eighth began, both teams were informed it would be the last inning due to constraints on the amount of time a team can practice in a given day. Garcia responded by taking the first pitch he saw and hitting into the left field bullpen to put the White team ahead.

Junior Jarrett Johnson came on in relief, and after recording an out, walked four-straight batters and hit one to force-in two runs.

Nolan Atkins pitched an inning and one-third of hitless ball for the win.

Three players on the White team reached base three times, including Ramirez, who did so for the second game in a row, Garcia and Garza, who scored a game-high three runs.

Junior Alex Henson started for the White team, going 2.1 innings, allowing three run on one hit and four walks while striking out four. He started strong, striking out two in a 1-2-3 first. In the second, Henson worked around a leadoff walk and a one-out walk by getting a double play.

In the third, however, freshman Omar Avila led off with a walk and senior Shane Ammon singled. One out later, redshirt freshman Bryant Stites walked to load the bases. Junior Evan Mason followed by hitting the ball back to Henson, but his throw to second sailed into the outfield and two runs scored. Senior Dillon Engelhart followed with an RBI-single to cap the inning with Green up 3-0.
