Box ScoreEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team is off to its first 3-0 start since 2006-07 following an 82-77 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Janari Joesaar led the Broncs (3-0) with a career-high 27 points points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, plus a career-high 12-of-16 from the line, with eight rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals. Junior
Shaquille Hines scored 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting with six rebounds. Senior
Shaquille Boga scored 12 points with six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Graduate student
Shaun Noriega hit three three-pointers while scoring 11 points.
Don Thomas led the Javelinas (2-2) with 15 points.
DJ Weathers scored 14 points while hitting four three-pointers.
Jamar Goodwin also scored 14 points.
Duan Wright scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
Jordan Jahr finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Hines hit a pair of early layups to put the Broncs up 4-0. Goodwin responded with a three, but Joesaar hit a layup to make it 6-3. Thomas tied the game on a three, but Noriega hit a three of his own to put the Broncs up 9-6. Wright followed with a layup and a three-pointer to give the Javelinas their first lead at 11-9.
After a free throw made it 12-9, Joesaar nailed a three and a layup to put the Broncs up 14-12, but Jahr hit a three to make it 15-14 Javelinas. Junior
Everett Osborne gave the Broncs the lead back with a jumper, but Weathers responded with a three to put the Javelinas back on top.
Osborne and Joesaar then hit back-to-back threes to make it 22-18 Broncs, but Goodwin hit a jumper and a three to put the Javelinas up one with 11:07 remaining. At that point, the Broncs were 4-for-5 from behind the arc while the Javelinas were 6-for-9.
The Broncs scored the next 11 points to kick off a 19-5 run and take a 41-28 lead on a layup by Boga with 1:21 remaining in the first half.
The Javelinas scored the next six points to spark a 10-2 and pull within five early in the second half.
The Javelinas took the lead back when Weathers capped a 10-1 run with a layup to make it 67-66 with 4:19 remaining, but Hines put the Broncs back on top with a layup on the next possession, kicking off a 9-2 run as the Broncs led the rest of the way.
The Broncs are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they open up a three-game tournament at No. 25 Utah against the host Utes in a game that will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
