EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team put the potential winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded the bases loaded in a 6-4 loss to the Northwestern State University Demons on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in the Broncs' third game of the Al Ogletree Classic.

Down 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, senior Shane Ammon and sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez hit singles to start the inning against Caleb Dugas. One out later, senior Alex Howe hit an RBI-single to make it 6-4. Senior Alberto Morales followed and worked a nine-pitch walk to load the bases and knock out Dugas. Adam Oller came in and struck out both batters he faced to record his first save.

Broncs (4-3) starter and senior Matthew Harrell (1-1) opened up the game with three and one-third scoreless innings, extending the Broncs' scoreless innings streak to 22 total innings dating back to the final two outs of last Sunday's game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The streak covered 21 complete innings.

The Demons (3-4) broke thought against Harrell with one out in the fourth, when Dugas, then playing first base, doubled, C.J. Webster hit an RBI-single, Reagan Kaufman singled, Chase Daughdrill hit an RBI-single, and Edwin Gomez bunted into an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 3-0.

The Broncs responded immediately, as Howe led off the bottom of the inning with an infield-single and scored on a double by Morales. Two outs later, junior Evan Mason hit an RBI-single to make it 3-2.

The Broncs tied the game in the fifth when, with the bases loaded and one out, redshirt freshman and McAllen Memorial alum Bryant Stites hit an RBI-single.

The Demons took the lead back in the sixth with three unearned runs without the benefit of a hit. Atkinson was hit by a pitch and Dugas walked to knock out Harrell. Freshman Tanner Dickerson came in, and the first batter he faced, Webster, tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Dickerson's throw to first sailed down the right field line to score a run and put runners at second and third. With the infield in, Kaufman followed with a ground ball to short that junior Jesus Garcia couldn't handle. As the ball went into the outfield, two runs scored to make it 6-3.

The Broncs close out the Al Ogletree Classic against Prairie View A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Any fan that brings four non-perishable food items will receive a free ticket as part of the Broncs' partnership with the RGV Food Bank known as "Strike Out Hunger." Gates open at 12.
