LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The eighth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball fell to the top-seeded Utah Valley University Wolverines 83-63 in the Western Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday at Orleans Arena.
Junior
Shaquille Boga led the Broncs (9-23) with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Senior
Hurley Johnson scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore
Shaquille Hines scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Holton Hunsaker led the Wolverines (20-10) with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, with seven assists.
Mitch Bruneel scored 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc.
Keawe Enos scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
The teams traded baskets in the early going, with the Broncs going up 7-4 on a Johnson three-pointer. The Wolverines went up 18-12 on a Bruneel layup with 12:56 remaining in the first half, but the Broncs went on an 8-2 run, capped by a pair of jumpers by Hines, to tie the game at 20-20 two minutes later.
At that point, the Broncs were 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc. The Wolverines were 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) from the field and 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
Hayes Garrity hit a jumper with 10:02 to go, and that's when the Wolverines' offense took off. Hunsaker followed with a pair of three-pointers and
Ben Aird made a layup as the Wolverines scored 10-straight points as part of a 31-5 run to go up 51-25 at halftime.
During the run, the Wolverines were 11-for-12 from the field and 5-for-5 from behind the arc to finish the first half 20-for-25 (80 percent) from the field and 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) from behind the arc.
The Wolverines went up by as many as 28 at 58-30 on a Bruneel three with 17:52 remaining, but the next time down the court, senior
Justin Leathers nailed a three to spark a 15-0 run as the Broncs pulled to within 58-45 on a pair of threes by Boga with 12:30 to go.
Boga hit another three at the 8:53 mark to bring the Broncs within 63-51, but that's as close as they got.
The Broncs shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) for the game, including 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from behind the arc. The Wolverines shot 70.5 percent (31-for-44), including 66.7 percent (10-for-15) from behind the arc.
