Box ScoreLYNNWOOD, Wash. – In a game spanning two days at two ballparks in two cities, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Seattle University Redhawks 13-8, with each team scoring two runs over the final four innings on Sunday at Triton Field on the campus of Edmonds Community College.
The game, which began after a 30-minute rain delay at 6:45 p.m. PT on Saturday at Meridian Park in Shoreline, was suspended due to a local curfew with the Redhawks (11-11, 3-0 WAC) leading 11-6 at 9:47.
When the game resumed on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. PT, sophomore Roma alum
Isaac Martinez took over for the Broncs (11-19, 1-5 WAC) and pitched a scoreless inning. In the sixth, however, the Redhawks started the inning with three-straight singles, the last of which was by
Landon Cray to drive-in
Ryan Somers, making it 12-6.
The Broncs got that run back in the seventh against
Skyler Genger, when senior
Brandon Roush led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI-groundout by junior
Evan Mason to make it 12-7.
In the bottom of the inning, the Redhawks loaded the bases with one out to knock out Martinez. Redshirt senior Edinburg alum
Austin Casas came in and plunked
Chase Fields to force-in a run, making it 13-7.
The Bronc complete the scoring in the eighth on an RBI-single by freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. against
Kyle Doyle.
That made a winner of
Ted Hammond (1-0), who pitched a scoreless fifth.
Senior
Matthew Harrell (2-6) took the loss after coming on in relief with one on and nobody out in the fourth and the Broncs up 6-5. He allowed the inherited runner to scored plus three more of his own while recording two outs. It was part of a six-run fourth that followed a four-run third.
Junior
Jesus Garcia posted his first-career four hit game, doing so in five at-bats while scoring two runs. Senior
Dillon Engelhart drove-in a career-high three runs while going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Senior
Alex Howe also had a two-hit game, driving in one run.
After the Broncs stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first, junior Broncs starter
Blake English had to wait 22 minutes before taking the mound due to a rain delay. When play resumed, the Redhawks put Cray at first with one out, from where he scored on a
Brian Olson double to make it 1-0.
The Broncs broke through against
Connor Moore in the third. Garcia led off with a double. Two batters later, Engelhart hit an RBI-single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the inning, however,
Brock Carpenter hit an RBI-double to give the Redhawks the lead back. A bunt-single and a walk loaded the bases, and then
Griffin Andreychuck hit a bunt-single to drive-in a run. Somers walked to force-in a run, and then Fields bunted into a fielder's choice to send home a run, making it 5-1.
The Broncs loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth. Howe came up with an RBI-groundout, and then, after senior
Alberto Morales walked to reload the bases, Engelhart singled to center. Two runs were going to score, but all three runners came home due to an error in centerfield. Sophomore PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez followed with an RBI-triple to give the Broncs a 6-5 lead.
Olson walked to leadoff the bottom of the inning to knock out English. Harrell came in and threw a wild pitch, allowing Olson to move to second. Olson moved to third on a passed ball, and then Carpenter hit an RBI-single to tie the game. Hendrickson followed with a walk, and, after a successful double-steal, Carpenter was thrown out trying to go home while Hendrickson advanced to third. One out later,
Michael McCann hit an RBI-single and Andreychuck hit an RBI-double to knock out Harrell. Senior
Matt Daniels came in and gave up RBI-doubles to Sommers and Cray to make it 11-6.
