Baseball Drops Slugfest to Utah Valley

Box Score

OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team and Utah Valley University Wolverines combined for 15 runs over the final inning and a half as the Broncs fell 14-11 on Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Down 8-2 entering the eighth, the Broncs (15-23, 5-7 WAC) sent 11 batters to the plate to score seven runs on five hits, two walks and two errors. Junior Jesus Garcia started the inning with an infield-single and then redshirt freshman Edinburg alum Edgar Cordon drew a four-pitch walk. Reliever Braden Poole (1-1) came in and senior Alex Howe hit a ground ball, but an error allowed the Broncs to load the bases, setting up a two-run single by senior Alberto Morales. After redshirt junior Edinburg alum Lee Rios reloaded the bases by reaching on catcher's interference, sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez walked to force-in a run. Senior Dillon Engelhart followed with an infield-RBI single, and then, one out later, senior Andy Fortuna hit an RBI-single and Garcia hit a two-run single to cap the inning with the Broncs up 9-8.

The Wolverines (14-20, 7-5 WAC) answered right back with six runs on three hits, one walk, one hit batsman and one error in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Roma alum Isaac Martinez (0-1) started the inning by allowing a single to Seth Rhineer and a walk to Sean Moysh. Senior Matthew Harrell came in and allowed an RBI-single to Mark Krueger and an RBI-fielder's choice to Riley White to give the Wolverines the lead. Redshirt senior Edinburg alum Austin Casas then entered the game. After the first out of the inning, a hit batsman loaded the bases, a wild pitch brought home a run, and then a Jordy Hart three-run home run put the Wolverines up 14-8.

The Broncs tried to rally back in the ninth, as Howe hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season and senior Evan Mason hit into an RBI-fielder's choice, but the Broncs couldn't get the tying run out of the on-deck circle.

The Broncs finished with 12 hits, their third-straight game reaching double-figures in hits. Three Broncs had multi-hit games, led by Garcia, who also drove-in two runs and scored twice, Cordon, who also drove-in two runs and scored once, and Ramirez, who drove-in one run, scored one run and drew a career-high three walks.

The Broncs return home to open a three-game series against Bakersfield on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 6.
