Shaquille Boga scored a career-high 29 points to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team to an 87-78 victory over the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints, the No. 13 ranked team in the NAIA, on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Boga scored 21 of his points in the second half. For the game, he hit a career-high 11 shots in 14 attempts, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, plus 5-of-6 from the line, with four assists. He was one of four Broncs (6-9) in double-figures scoring, along with sophomore
Janari Jonesaar, who scored 20 points with 13 rebounds and a career-high tying five assists for his fourth double-double, freshman
Dan Kimasa, who scored 13 points with three blocks, and junior
Shaquille Hines, who scored 10 points.
De'Quentin Greer led three Saints (8-2) in double-figures scoring with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Daniel Skinner scored 19 points with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Christian Wood-Dvorak nailed six three-pointers for 18 points.
The Broncs led by five early, going up 9-4 on a dunk by Hines. The Broncs still led 17-15 after a jumper by Boga with 10:20 remaining in the first half, but back-to-back threes by
Michael Hagan-Daniel and
Otis Devine sparked a 19-8 run as the Saints took their largest lead at 34-25 just over four minutes later.
The Broncs scored the next eight points to pull within one at 34-33 on a Hines jumper, and then took the lead back at the start of the second half on a Boga jumper that made it 42-41.
The Saints took the lead back at 45-43 on a Greer layup, but Boga and Kimasa converted back-to-back three-point plays to put the Broncs up by four.
The Saints tied the game at 51-51 on a Skinner dunk, but the Broncs responded with a 14-6 run to take a 65-57 lead. Skinner followed with a jumper, sparking a 13-5 run as the Saints tied the game at 70-70 with 4:23 remaining.
Hines hit two free throws and a jumper to give the Broncs the lead back for good, starting a 17-8 run to end the game.
The Broncs open up Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Chicago State at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
