CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior Shaquille Boga and junior Shaquille Hines scored 24 points each, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Chicago State University Cougars 78-73 on Saturday at Jones Convocation Center.
 
Boga hit a career-high six three-pointers to go with three assists and two steals. Hines went 11-for-16 from the field with a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Janari Joesaar also reached double-figures, scoring 13 points with six rebounds.
 
Clarke Rosenberg led the Cougars (6-19, 2-6 WAC) with 26 points while going 5-for-5 from behind the arc, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Sean Hill scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
 
The Broncs (8-16, 2-6 WAC) scored 25 points off of 15 Cougars turnovers while allowing just 12 points off of eight of their own turnovers.
 
Hines hit back-to-back baskets to gives the Broncs a 4-0 lead, and then, after a Hill three, a Hines dunk put the Broncs up 6-3. Rosenberg hit a three to tie it, but freshman Isaiah Hobbs made a layup to make it 8-6 Broncs.
 
The Cougars scored the next six points to go up 12-8 on a Johnny Griffin dunk.
 
The Broncs pulled back within one at 24-23 on a Boga three, but a Rosenberg jumper and a Montana Byrd three made it 29-23 Cougars.
 
The Cougars led by as many as seven in the first half, but the Broncs climbed back within one at 33-32 on a Boga three early in the second half.
 
The Broncs tied the game at 40-40 with 15:38 remaining when Joesaar converted a three-point play, but Trayvon Palmer responded with a three to give the Cougars the lead back.
 
The Broncs were again within one at 43-42 after a Hines jumper, but the Cougars responded with a 14-0 run, capped by a Rosenberg three, to go up 57-42 with 7:52 left.
 
The Broncs pulled to within seven at 73-66 on a Hines layup with 33 seconds left, and then got within five on a three by junior Everett Osborne in the final seconds.
 
The Broncs return home on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Bakersfield at the UTPA Fieldhouse for the fourth annual Challenge of the Deans. The first 75 fans in attendance will receive Broncs rally towels. Doors open at 6.
