PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a hard fought 3-4 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies on Friday at Paseo Tennis Center.
 
"New Mexico State won the big points today," Vaqueros head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada said. "A lot of deuces didn't fall our way today but the girls fought extremely hard out there. I am very proud of them for not giving up."
 
The Aggies (4-7) took control early on as they swept through doubles for the 1-0 lead. New Mexico State then opened singles with wins on courts two and five.
 
The Vaqueros (3-5) then answered back with on courts five, three and six. Freshman Doris Aleksovska picked up a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win over Lindsay Harlas on court five.
 
Freshman Dominique Ibarra opened her match against Chloe Jolliff with a 3-6 loss in the first set. Ibarra fought off 10 match points in the match to win the second set 7-5 and then clinched the point with a 6-3 win in the third set.
 
Freshman Tara Donaho opened her match against Eli Arnaudova with a 6-3 win in the first set. After falling in the second set 3-6, Donaho closed out her match with a 6-4 win in the third set to tie the match before the Aggies won on court four to clinch it.
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face the Chicago State Cougars at Paseo Tennis Center.
