WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team looks to get back in the win column as they face Baylor University on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-1) fell to McNeese State for their first loss of the season.
Dominique Esparza and
Anastasia Belyaeva defeated McNeese State's duo of Giovanna Fioretti and Sarah Jurakova 7-6 but McNeese State won on courts two and three to take the doubles point.
In singles, Belyaeva got UTRGV on the board with a straight set 6-4, 6-4 win over Vivien Borbely on court four.
Scouting Baylor
Baylor will be kicking off their season on Sunday when they face UTRGV and are coming off of an 18-15 dual match season last year.
Baylor returns six from last year's squad including Blair Shankle, who led the team with 14 wins in singles play. Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler each posted nine singles victories last year.
In doubles, Newbork and Traxler posted seven victories last season, which was second on the team. Shankle teamed with Kiah Generette to post 17 victories but only Shankle returns this season.
Baylor used 23 different doubles combinations last year with only three teams posting more than seven wins.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 0-5 all-time against Baylor in series that dates back to 1990.
These two teams faced off last season as Baylor picked up the 4-1 victory in Waco.
Tara Donaho recorded the lone point for UTRGV as she recorded her first collegiate career dual match singles victory.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
Next Up
UTRGV will open up their home schedule on January 28 when they host St. Mary's University at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
