Women’s Tennis Opens Home Slate Sunday Against No. 10 St. Mary’s

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team open up their home schedule on Sunday when they host St. Mary's at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 10 a.m.

Admission is free and all fans are encouraged to attend.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-2) closed out play last weekend with a 0-4 loss against Baylor in Waco.
 
Baylor took the doubles point after winning on courts two and three but the team of Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva were leading Theresa Van Zyle and Karina Traxler 5-3 before it went unfinished.
 
Baylor put the match away in singles but UTRGV held leads on a pair of courts. Marine Darzyan took the first set from 117th ranked Jessica Hinojosa before the match was stopped in the second set and Dominique Ibarra was leading 3-1 in the second set after taking the first from Traxler before going unfinished as well.
 
Scouting St. Mary's
St. Mary's will be opening their season on Sunday against UTRGV. They are coming off of a fall season where they were ranked 10th in the ITA Division II rankings.
 
Ally Maciel, who won the singles championship at the South Central Regional Championship, is ranked sixth in singles. Maciel went 13-4 last season while going undefeated conference play. She played in the No. 3 (2-0), No. 4 (4-2), No. 5 (7-1) and No. 6 (0-1) spots.
 
St. Mary's had seven finish with double figure wins in singles play last year with Cristina Lopez leading the way with an 18-5 record.
 
In doubles, the team of Hanna Petersen and Tyra Timm are ranked sixth.
 
St. Mary's won the Heartland Conference Championship last season and made it to the NCAA D-II Sweet 16 and Final Eight.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-1 against St. Mary's all-time in a series that dates back to 2002. That last time these two teams played came on March 1, 2013 when St. Mary's picked up the 4-3 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action Wednesday, February 1, when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 1 p.m. as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
