DENVER, Colo. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team learned on Wednesday that senior guard
Nick Dixon is part of the Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coaches and Media First Teams.
Additionally, UTRGV was picked to finish sixth in both the coaches and media polls.
Last season, Dixon earned All-WAC Second Team and All-Newcomer Team honors after averaging 18.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 32 games (29 starts) while shooting .521 from the field and .765 from the foul line.
Dixon led the WAC in free throws made (173, 21
st NCAA) and attempted (226, 22
nd NCAA), steals per game (44
th NCAA), total steals (60, 47
th NCAA), scoring (69
th NCAA), and field goal percentage (80
th NCAA). He also ranked second in the WAC in total points (603, 81
st NCAA) and field goals made (201, 109
th NCAA), as well as seventh in field goal attempts (386, 247
th NCAA).
Dixon put together one of the best individual seasons in program history, ranking fourth in free throws made, sixth in free throws attempts, and 10
th in total points. He led the team in scoring 12 times, rebounding eight times, and assists 16 times. Dixon reached double-figures in scoring 28 times, including 14 games of 20 or more points, and double-figures in rebounding twice en route to two double-doubles.
UTRGV was picked to finish ahead of UMKC and Chicago State in both polls, finishing with 16 points in the coaches poll and 72 points in the media poll.
Grand Canyon was picked to win the WAC Championship, while New Mexico State was picked second and Seattle U was picked fifth. The coaches picked CSU Bakersfield to finish third and Utah Valley fourth, while the media selected Utah Valley third and CSU Bakersfield fourth.
UTRGV opens the season on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. against Nicholls State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
