SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell 75-58 to Texas State University on Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
Senior
Nick Dixon led
UTRGV (2-2) with 16 points while junior
Jordan Jackson added 11 points and four rebounds. Senior
Mike Hoffman chipped in 10 points.
Texas State (1-2) had three players in double-figure scoring with Nijal Pearson led the way with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Immanuel King added 13 points and eight rebounds while Prijovic also added 13 points with nine rebounds.
Texas State opened the game with an 11-2 run before UTRGV answered back with a 6-2 run as they got a pair of free throws by sophomore
Xavier McDaniel Jr. and a pair of layups from senior
Moe McDonald to get within 13-8 with 8:48 left in the first half.
Texas State came right back with six straight points to push their lead back up to 19-8. Sophomore
Lesley Varner Jr. and Hoffman knocked down three-pointers to get UTRGV back to within 20-15 but Texas State put together a 9-2 run to take a 29-17 lead with 1:53 left in the half. UTRGV and Texas State exchanged a pair of buckets to close out the half as Texas State went into the locker room leading 34-24.
Dixon opened the second half with a jumper before Texas State followed with an 8-2 run to push their lead to 42-28 with 17:29 left to play. UTRGV got within 53-41 after a Jackson dunk but Texas State kept UTRGV at bay the rest of the way.
UTRGV stays on the road as they visit University of North Texas on Monday at 7 p.m. at the UNT Coliseum.
