LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team is set to close out the first WAC cluster on Sunday when they face New Mexico State University at 1 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (3-11, 2-0 WAC) picked up their second straight win after defeating Seattle U 5-2 on Saturday.
UTRGV once again won the doubles point as they won two of the three matches.
Dominique Esparza and
Anastasia Belyaeva picked up a 6-3 win on court two and it was
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra won 6-1 on court one to clinch the point.
In singles, Seattle U got on the board with a win on court six and then it was Ibarra who picked up a straight set win on court four. Seattle U picked up a win on court one but UTRGV wouldn't lose another court.
Belyaeva won on court two in straight sets and then it was
Chloe Leclere who won in three sets on court five. Darzyan closed out the match with a three set win on court three.
Scouting New Mexico State
New Mexico State is 5-8 on the season after falling 3-4 to Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday. They did open the cluster with a 5-2 win over Seattle U on Friday.
NMSU also has wins over Hardin-Simmons, Mesa Community College, Weber State and Central Oklahoma.
NMSU returns a good core from last season. They return Eli Arnaudova, Lindsay Harlas, Gabrielle Joyce, Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-6 against New Mexico State in a series that dates back to 2008.
The two met twice last year as they split both matches. UTRGV's win over New Mexico State came in the WAC Championship match sending them to the NCAA Tournament.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on March 31 when they face the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Kansas City at 10 a.m.
