KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team kicks off its second Western Athletic Conference cluster Friday when they face the University of Missouri-Kansas City at the Plaza Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (3-12, 2-1 WAC) fell 2-5 to New Mexico State to close out their first WAC cluster of the season.
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra were the only doubles team to pick up a victory as they won on court one. New Mexico State won on courts two and three to take the point.
In singles, Darzayan and Ibarra came through for the lone points of the match. Ibarra picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win on court three while Darzyan won 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 on court four.
Ibarra has now won seven straight singles matches while she and Darzyan have teamed up to win seven straight in doubles.
Scouting UMKC
UMKC is 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in conference place. They are coming off back-to-back win over New Mexico State and Chicago State back on March 18 and 19.
They also have wins over South Dakota, William Jewel, South Dakota State, Idaho State and UTSA.
They return five from last year's squad including Marina Albert, Raquel Argenal, Katie Fries and Melinda Johnson.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 5-0 against UMKC in a series that dates back to 2014.
Last year these two teams met twice and it was UTRGV who came away with both victories.
UTRGV beat UMKC 5-2 on March 20 in Phoenix, Arizona and the UTRGV made it two in a row on the year with a 4-1 win in the WAC Tournament to punch their ticket to championship match.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
Next Up
UTRGV will close out conference play on Saturday when they face Grand Canyon at 10 a.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center.
