LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The No. 3 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team will face off against No. 2 New Mexico State on Saturday in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament for a spot in the championship match.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (4-14, 2-3 WAC) closed out the regular season with a 1-6 loss to Texas State back on April 15.
Chloe Leclere got the lone point on the board for UTRGV as she picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Joy Chia at the No. 5 spot.
UTRGV did pick up a win in doubles as the team of
Dominique Ibarra and
Marine Darzyan beat Eva Dench and Alex Jones 6-2 on court one.
Scouting New Mexico State
Mexico State ended the season 10-12 on the season while going 3-2 in conference play. They finished off the season with a two-match win streak after beating UTEP and the University of Texas Permian Basin.
New Mexico State is led by WAC Player of the Year Rimpledeep Kaur who went 11-7 on the season while going 5-0 in conference play.
New Mexico State had three others post double-digit singles victories in Lindsay Harlas (10), Rebecca Keijzerwaard (10) and Vanessa Valdez (12).
In doubles, Harlas and Gabrielle Joyce went 11-2 as team to lead New Mexico State while playing most of their matches at the No. 3 spot. Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault posted a 10-4 record while going 7-3 at the No. 2 spot while Valdez and Keijzerwaard went 10-8 on the season as a team.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-7 against New Mexico State in a series that dates back to 2008.
These two teams met earlier this year and it was New Mexico State who came away with the 5-2 win in Las Cruces.
The two met twice last year as they split both matches. UTRGV's win over New Mexico State came in the WAC Championship match sending them to the NCAA Tournament

UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.

The winner of this second round match will move on to the WAC Tournament championship match on Sunday.
