EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men's Basketball Head Coach
Lew Hill announced on Friday the signing of 6-4, 175-pound rising junior guard
Jordan Jackson, the son of Basketball Hall of Famer
Sheryl Swoopes, for the 2017-18 academic year.
"He's the second player we have with that kind of lineage, along with
Xavier McDaniel Jr.," Hill said. "At this stage of their careers it should be fun pressure. They should be living their own dreams, not their parents'. Jordan should be trying to find himself and his identity. I think he has a good opportunity to do that here."
Jackson played his sophomore season at Midland College, averaging 9.0 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting .439 (82-for-187) from the field in 26 games (10 starts).
Jackson began his collegiate career at Texas Tech in 2015-16, scoring 26 points with 17 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals in 122 minutes across 23 games off the bench.
A two-time Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class 5A All-State honoree, Jackson played at St. Pius X in Houston, averaging 13.4 points per game as a junior and 9.8 points per game as a sophomore.
"He's a long, athletic scoring guard," Hill said. "I think he could be a great defender and a great two-way player for us."
