LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team looks for its second straight win as they face the University of New Mexico on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a neutral site match at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University.
Last Time Out
UTRGV opened the season with a 4-3 victory over Rice University on January 14.
After dropping the doubles point, sophomore Mateo Schmit got UTRGV on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jaired Aiman on court six. Rice answered with a win on court two but sophomore Dennis Boisseau got the point back with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Jacob Eskeland on court three.
Rice got a point back to take the lead with a win on court five but senior
Koby Jansen tied things up with a 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 win on court one over Sumit Sarkar.
It all came down to court four where senior
Elliot Johnstone had dropped the first set 5-7 to Daniel Warren but then knotted things up with a 7-6 win in the second. In the third and decisive set, Johnstone sealed with victory with a 7-5 win.
It was the first win over Rice since 1979.
Scouting New Mexico
Saturday's match will be the season opener for New Mexico State, who went 12-13 last year.
New Mexico welcomes back six from last year's squad, including Ricky Hernandez Tong, who finished with a 20-10 overall record and a 13-8 record in dual match play. Hernandez Tong primarily played the No. 2 spot where he posted a 9-7 record.
Jorge Escutia also returns after posting a 12-10 overall record while going 8-8 in dual match play. Dominic West posted a 13-5 record last year while playing at both the No. 3 and 4 spots.
In doubles, only one team posted double-digit victories as West teamed with Bart Van Leijsen to post a 12-5 record.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-2 all-time in a series that dates back to 1970.
The last time these two teams met came back on April 3, 1986 at the University of Houston Cougar Classic. New Mexico came away with the 6-3 victory.
The last time UTRGV beat New Mexico came back on March 1, 1982 as they picked up the 5-4 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
