EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis snapped a seven-match losing streak to the University of Texas at San Antonio with a 4-3 win on Saturday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The last time UTRGV (3-4) defeated UTSA came back on March 14, 2010 when it won 4-2 at Cimarron Country Club.
 
"It was such a team effort and it was a fantastic one," UTRGV head coach Sonia Hahn said. "I am so proud of our girls. I am so happy for them. They have been working so hard and to be able to reap the rewards is so important for them confidence wise and mentally."
 
UTRGV fell behind early in the match as they dropped the doubles point falling on two of the three courts.
 
In singles, junior Dominique Ibarra got UTRGV on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Charleen Tiwari on court three, which tied the match at one. 
 
Junior Doris Aleksovska followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court five over Sonia Madronal giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Junior Marine Darzyan added on to UTRGV's lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over her own over Ivan Ilic on court two that made it 3-1. 
 
After UTSA (3-2) won on court four to make the score 3-2, it all came down to the final two courts. Freshman Lasya Patnaik opened her match with a 6-4 victory in the first set over Diya Menon but found herself trailing 2-5 in the second. Patnaik won five straight games to win her match 7-5 clinching the win for UTRGV.
 
UTSA added another point with a win on court one to close out the match.
 
UTRGV will next head to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, February 13.
