CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team dropped its opening match of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions 1-4 to the University of South Alabama on Friday at H-E-B Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (4-6) fell behind early in the match as South Alabama (5-4) took two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
 
In singles, senior Elliot Johnstone got UTRGV on the board with a win on court four. Johnstone defeated Oliver Gingras in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match at 1-1.
 
South Alabama answered with wins on courts three, two and six to clinch the match. Senior Koby Jansen split sets with Clement Marzol on court one falling 4-6 in the first and then winning 6-4 in the second before the match was stopped in the third.
 
Freshman Zane Kohrs also had split sets in his match as he fell 2-6 in the first set to Santiago di Loreto before picking up the 6-2 win in the second. His match was also stopped in the third once the match was clinched. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action this evening when it takes on Troy University at 5 p.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
