MCALLEN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team won its opening match of the UTRGV Spring Break Showdown by defeating Southern Utah University 4-2 on Thursday at McAllen Country Club.
 
"This was a tough match," UTRGV head coach Dann Nelson said. "We had to dig deep to get this win. We found ourselves down in doubles and clawed our way back. I think that's a big part of the maturity and experience that our guys have. This was a close match. Southern Utah plays good doubles and fought hard out there."
 
UTRGV (6-8) fell behind early in doubles as Southern Utah (10-5) picked up the win on court two. Sophomore Mateo Schmit and senior Elliot Johnstone answered back with a 7-6 win over Agustin Tamagnone and Remus Cope on court three.
 
Senior Koby Jansen and Yehonatan Kaufman clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 win over Conor Tordoff and Jonathan Morales on court one.
 
In singles, sophomore Dennis Boisseau picked up the 6-3, 6-1 win over Morales on court two pushing the UTRGV lead to 2-0. 
 
Jansen quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tordoff on court one that got UTRGV within one point of clinching the win but Southern Utah won back-to-back matches on courts five and four to get within 3-2.
 
Kaufman put the match away with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tamagnone on court three with the final match on court six going unfinished. 
 
UTRGV continues play in the Spring Break Showdown on Friday at 1 p.m. when it faces Oral Roberts University at the McAllen Country Club.
