Women’s Tennis Faces New Mexico State in Search of First WAC Regular Season Title

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team looks for its first Western Athletic Conference regular season title when it faces New Mexico State on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. 
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (12-8, 4-0 WAC) picked up its program record fourth conference win after defeating Chicago State 5-2 on Friday. 
 
UTRGV took the early lead by taking two of three doubles courts. Dominique Esparza teamed up with junior Doris Aleksovska to defeat Lorea Gamboa and Leshia Gadacz 6-0 on court two.
 
Sophomore Anastasia Belyaeva and freshman Lasya Patnaik sealed the point with a 7-6 victory over Anastasii Goncharova and Iesha Shepherd on court three.
 
UTRGV kept things going in singles play as Marine Darzyan, Dominique Ibarra, Anastasia Belyaeva, and Lasya Patnaik picked up singles to clinch the win. 
 
Belyaeva extended her win streak to nine straight wins while improving to 4-0 in conference play. Ibarra also extended her win streak to six straight wins and also is 4-0 in conference play.
 
Scouting New Mexico State
New Mexico State is coming into the weekend with a 7-11 record while posting a 2-0 record in WAC play. 
 
New Mexico State is coming off of a 0-4 loss to New Mexico, who UTRGV defeated back on March 18. 
 
New Mexico State is scheduled to face off against Seattle U on Friday.
 
Yadira Rubio leads the team with a 10-5 record while Lindsay Harlas has posted an 8-6. As a team, New Mexico State is 37-56 record in singles play while in doubles it has posted a 16-29 record.
 
Rubio and Harlas have teamed up to post a 4-8 record while Quinty Janssen and Rebecca Keijzerwaard have teamed up for a 3-3 record. 
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-8 all-time against New Mexico State in a series that dates back to 2008. 
 
Both teams played each other last year twice where New Mexico State won both matches 5-2 and 4-1.
 
The last time UTRGV defeated New Mexico State came back on May 1, 20016 when it picked up the 4-2 victory at the WAC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will turn its attention to the WAC Tournament, which runs from April 27-29 at the Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Arizona.
