SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team won its first regular season Western Athletic Conference Championship after defeating New Mexico State 5-2 on Saturday at Amy Yee Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (13-8, 5-0 WAC) finished off the regular season undefeated in WAC play and with a seven-match win streak. With the WAC regular season championship, UTRGV has earned the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament with the first-round bye.
 
The win over New Mexico State is also the first since UTRGV defeated them for the WAC Tournament Championship back on May 1, 2016.
 
UTRGV took control early in the match by taking the doubles point. Juniors Marine Daryzan and Dominque Ibarra posted a 6-2 win over Rebecca Keijzerwaard and Lindsay Harlas on court one and then it was sophomore Anastasia Belyaeva and freshman Lasya Patnaik who made sure UTRGV got the doubles point with a 6-0 win over Eli Arnaudova and Helena Colvee on court three.
 
In singles, UTRGV stayed in control of the match by winning on four of the six courts. New Mexico State (7-13, 2-2 WAC) won on courts one and two but UTRGV came away with wins on courts three, four, five, and six to clinch the win.
 
Ibarra posted a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 win over Quinty Janssen on court three as she finished WAC play 5-0 and extended her win streak to seven straight.
 
Belyaeva pushed her win streak to 10 in a row with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Yadira Rubio on court four. Belyaeva also wrapped up WAC play with a 5-0 record. 
 
Doris Aleksovska defeated Arnaudova in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 on court five and it was Patnaik on court six with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Colvee.
 
UTRGV will now turn its attention to the WAC Tournament that will take place at the Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Arizona from April 27-29.
