Fan Support Component Among Changes to South Texas Showdown Format

Showdown Standings

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Departments of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday changes to the format of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, including the addition of a fan support component as part of a revamped points structure.

Whichever team draws the larger attendance during meetings in volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and baseball will earn one point per sport.

Additionally, all sport programs will now have the opportunity to earn up to six points during the season. No more than two competitions per sport will be included in the point totals.

"The addition of the attendance component will elevate the rivalry series and create a new level of excitement for our fans and the community," UTRGV Director of Athletic Chris King said. "We look forward to feeding off the energy that our fans provide to win the showdown not only this year, but for many years to come."

The South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is an annual rivalry series in which UTRGV and Corpus Christi compete against each other in 12 sports, including twice each in baseball, volleyball, women's soccer and golf, and men's and women's basketball and tennis, and once each in men's and women's cross country and outdoor track & field.

There will be a total of 60 points available in athletic competition and four points available in fan competition.

In the event of a tie, the third and final meeting between the baseball teams, set for May 14 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, will serve as the tiebreaker. Should the competition already be decided, the trophy will be presented before the game.

"This rivalry has been such a great addition the past two years," Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Interim Director of Athletics Willis Wilson said. "Adding in an attendance element to the point total should help energize both home fan bases. This should be a fantastic incentive to give both institutions' student-athletes an amazing collegiate experience."

This is the third year of the showdown, with Corpus Christi winning 27.5-22.5 last year and 36-21 the previous year. The yearly champion is presented with a traveling trophy at the first men's basketball game of the following year.

"With branches located in Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley, Navy Army Community Credit Union is excited and honored to continue to partner with both Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV for the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union," Navy Army Community Credit Union Chief Marketing Officer Ashley Smith said.
