HUNTSVILLE – Sophomore Sandra Putz won a pair of matches to advance to the finals of Flight C to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team on the first day of the Bearkat Invitational on Saturday at the Kelly and Ina May McAdams Tennis Complex.
 
Putz opened play with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Texas State's Renata Gonzalez. Putz followed with a victory over Texas State's Toby Lewis to advance to the championship match. After opening with a 6-4 win in the first set, Putz fell 4-6 in the second but bounced back to win the tiebreaker 10-8.
 
Putz will face Tyler Junior College's Momoko Yoshimura for the Flight C Championship.
 
Freshman Valeria Montero also picked up a win in Flight D by defeating Sam Houston State's Stevie Ybarra 6-0, 6-2.
 
Play will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
