RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Orange team edged the White team 116.5-113.5 at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field team's annual intrasquad on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
Had this been a regular season competition, four program records would have fallen, including the men's and women's 60-meter dashes, the women's shot put, and the men's triple jump.
 
The current program record for the men's 60-meter dash, which is only contested during the indoor season, is 6.95 seconds, set by then-freshman Maxime Gardes last season. In this meet, which was contested outdoors, freshman Ackeem Gordon finished in a time of 6.66 seconds. He was followed by sophomore Yashawn Hamilton, who finished milliseconds behind, also clocking in at 6.66 seconds, Gardes, who finished in 6.68 seconds, and senior Anthony Magallon, who finished in 6.91 seconds.
 
On the women's side, the program record is 7.54 seconds, set by then sophomore Idatonye Cheetham-West in 2018. In this meet, Cheetham-West finished in 7.44 seconds. Sophomore Zarrey Sams placed second with a time of 7.60 seconds, which would have ranked third, while freshman Mystique Brown finished in a time of 7.61 seconds, which would have ranked fourth.
 
After being ranked No. 12 during the outdoor season and No. 19 during the indoor season last year, the women's shot put squad picked up right where it left off, as sophomore Alexandrea Hurst uncorked a 15.87-meter shot put, which would have shattered the existing outdoor program record of 15.31 meters set by then freshman Samariae Bonds last season. Bonds came in second with a throw of 15.22 meters, would have ranked fourth.
 
In the triple jump, newcomer and junior Baffour Kyem recorded a mark of 15.13 meters, which would have broken the 26-year old outdoor record of 15.09 meters held by David Hunter.
 
UTRGV opens the indoor season Jan. 17-18 at Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational.
