EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team dropped the 2019 season opener to No. 16 Oklahoma State University (OSU) 10-3 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,179.

This is the second largest crowd at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, which the team has been playing at since 2002, in program history. The record is 3,604, set on Feb. 1, 2003 against Texas State.

After stranding a runner at third in the top of the first, UTRGV (0-1) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single by senior Anthony Gomez, who went 2-for-4 with a walk.

In the fourth, with UTRGV down 3-1, junior Christian Sepulveda scored on a wild pitch.

One inning later, with OSU (1-0) up 7-2, UTRGV loaded the bases with nobody out and scored on a double play by junior Coleman Grubbs to pull within four.

Senior Chase Adams (0-1) started and struck out five in 4.1 innings. He struck out the side in the second, but the third strike on the third strikeout went to the backstop, allowing a run to score. Max Hewitt, who went 3-for-4 with two walks, followed with an RBI-single to give OSU a 2-1 lead.

Christian Funk homered to right in the third to put OSU up 3-1.

OSU scored four runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Bryce Carter, an RBI-triple by Trevor Boone and a wild pitch.

OSU added two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Colin Simpson and an RBI-single by Carter, who finished 3-for-4 with a walk.

Hewitt completed the scoring with an RBI-single in the ninth.

That made a winner of Peyton Battenfield (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

UTRGV and OSU play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Gates open at 1.
