KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the seventh time this season, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team came back from a double-digit deficit, this time from down 12 with 6:01 remaining, to beat Kansas City 75-70 on Saturday at Swinney Recreation Center.
UTRGV (18-14, 9-6 WAC) finishes the season 6-2 in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) road games, breaking the 14-year old program record for conference road wins (5-4 in the Sun Belt in 1994-95). UTRGV is now 8-7 on the road, the team's highest road win total since 1975-76 (8-3).
With 18 wins, UTRGV has its highest overall win total since 2007-08 (18-13). The nine conference wins are the program's most since winning a program record 10 Sun Belt contests in 1994-95.
Senior
Terry Winn III led UTRGV with 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Javon Levi scored 17 points with six assists and three steals. Junior
Jordan Jackson scored 10 points with a career-high five steals.
Brandon McKissic led Kansas City (10-20, 5-7 WAC) with 20 points.
Rob Whitfield scored 16 points.
Aleer Leek finished with 11 points.
UTRGV trailed 64-52 with six minutes left. Levi made two layups and a free throw and Jackson made a layup and a dunk as UTRGV pulled within 65-61.
It was still a four-point game with two minutes remaining when Winn made four free throws and a jumper to give UTRGV a 70-68 lead.
Then, with the score tied at 70 and one minute left, junior
Lesley Varner II converted a three-point play and added another layup to give UTRGV the win.
UTRGV closes out the regular season on Thursday at 7 p.m. against California Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The senior class will be honored in a special pregame ceremony. Doors open at 6.
