PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 victory over Chicago State University on Friday at the GCU Tennis Complex.
 
UTRGV (4-9, 1-0 WAC) came out looking to dominate the match right away as it swept through doubles against Chicago State (6-11, 0-1 WAC).
 
Seniors Marine Darzyan and Dominque Ibarra started doubles with a 6-1 win over Anastasii Goncharova and Iesha Shepherd on court one. Freshmen Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga followed with a 6-1 win over Kristina Pukhavea and Lizi Morgoshia on court three to clinch the point. 
 
Seniors Michelle Walker and Doris Aleksovska put the final touches on doubles with a 6-0 win over Diana Borodina and Katarina Drazic on court two.
 
UTRGV came out and kept things rolling in singles. Ibarra started singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Goncharova on court one to extend UTRGV's lead to 2-0.
 
Putz followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court six over Morgoshia that made it 3-0 before Chicago State won on court four.
 
Freshman Nethmi Waduge made it 6-0 with a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win over Shepherd on court five and Darzyan put the cap on the scoring with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Drazic  on court two.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday when it faces New Mexico State at 6 p.m.
