SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team dropped the middle game of a three-game series to Sacramento State 7-1 on Saturday at John Smith Field.
UTRGV (14-9, 0-2 WAC) scored its run in the third when a single by senior
Coleman Grubbs scored senior
Anthony Gomez and made the score 4-1.
Grubbs was one of three UTRGV players to record two hits, along with juniors
Andy Atwood and
Tyler Torres and sophomore Mercedes alum
Oliver Closner IV.
Only one Sacramento State (15-7, 2-0 WAC) hitter had multiple hits,
Dylan McPhillips, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Five different players had RBI, though.
Trevor Doyle started the scoring with a second-inning squeeze play.
Bronson Grubbs followed with a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch to put Sacramento State up 4-0 against graduate student
Conner Dotson (0-1).
Sacramento State added two runs in the fourth on a double by
Dawsen Bacho and a single by
Martin Vincelli-Simard.
Steven Moretto homered in the seventh to complete the scoring.
That made a winner of
Brady Rodriguez (3-1), who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
UTRGV and Sacramento State wrap up this three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
