SAN ANTONIO – Senior
Diamond Thomas recorded the second longest discus throw in program history to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams during the final day of the UIW Invitational on Saturday at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium and the UIW Northeast Facilities.
Thomas won the discus with a throw of 51.05 meters, the second-best in the Western Athletic Conference, 29
th-best in the west region and 50
thbest in the NCAA this season. The throw was 0.45 meters longer than her previous personal record, set a week prior during the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
The result was one of three wins for UTRGV, as senior
Felicia Wills took the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.23, freshman Economedes alum
Kyle Marroquin won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.91, and freshman Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum
Max Carmona won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:53.60.
As teams, both UTRGV finished second in both the women's and men's competitions, behind host Incarnate Word and ahead of South Florida.
UTRGV competes at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, on Thursday and Friday before competing at Rice's J. Fred Duckett Twilight on Saturday.
