EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team won its fifth-straight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series by taking the first two games, including a 15-7 win over Seattle U on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (27-14, 13-4 WAC) last won this many WAC series in 2014, when after starting 1-5, UTRGV won seven-straight WAC series to finish 17-10.
UTRGV is now off to its best start since 1988, when the team was also 27-14 en route to a 30-14 start and a 33-25 overall record.
The top of the UTRGV order, made up of juniors
Coleman Grubbs,
Christian Sepulveda and
Conrado Diaz, combined to go 8-for-13 with four walks, six RBI and seven runs scored. As a team, UTRGV had 13 hits and nine walks.
UTRGV's lead was cut to 7-6 after Seattle U (9-32, 4-13 WAC) scored three runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, though, UTRGV sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on three bases-loaded walks, two-run singles by Diaz and freshman Vela alum
Aaron Galvan, and an RBI-fielder's choice by freshman
Jacob Flores.
That was one of three innings in which UTRGV put up a crooked number. Down 1-0 in the first, UTRGV scored on a double play by senior
Anthony Gomez, an error and a Galvan RBI-single against
Josh Thompson (0-3) to go up 4-1.
Then, with the score 4-2 in the fourth, Grubbs drove-in a run with a single and Sepulveda launched a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to put UTRGV up 7-2.
Senior McAllen Memorial alum
Juan Carreon II (2-0) picked up the win by pitching a career-high tying four innings of relief and striking out three.
