LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team knocked off a ranked team for the second time this season and a Big 12 team for the third time by beating No. 10 Texas Tech 6-3 on Tuesday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
 
Texas Tech (29-14) is the highest ranked opponent UTRGV (29-14) has defeated since March 14, 2012, when UTRGV won at No. 8 Texas A&M 5-2.
 
Including a 5-2 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State on Feb. 16, UTRGV has now defeated two ranked teams in the same season. The last time UTRGV is known to have multiple wins over ranked teams is 1983, when UTRGV took 3 out of 4 at No. 1 Wichita State.
 
UTRGV also has a 6-5 win at Kansas State from March 17, making this the first time UTRGV has three wins over Big 12 competition since 2000, when UTRGV beat Texas Tech three times and Texas A&M twice, with all those wins coming at home. This is the first time UTRGV has ever beaten three different Big 12 opponents and the first time UTRGV has won multiple road games against Big 12 competition in the same season.
 
UTRGV's bats erupted against Mason Montgomery (3-1) with two outs in the second, as sophomore Jacob Hirsh hit an RBI-single, stole second and scored on a single by junior Coleman Grubbs, who moved to second the throw. After an error put runners on the corners, junior Christian Sepulveda hit a fly ball to left field that hit off Cody Masters' glove to score two runs and knock out Montgomery. Senior Anthony Gomez greeted reliever Taylor Floyd with an RBI-single to put UTRGV up 5-0.
 
Grubbs also had an RBI-single in the sixth inning to put UTRGV up 6-2.
 
Junior Conrado Diaz recorded his fourth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Grubbs, Gomez, Hirsh, and freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan each finished with two hits. Grubbs had two RBI while Hirsh scored twice and drew two walks.
 
UTRGV out-hit Texas Tech 14-to-5.
 
Sophomore Max Balderrama Jr.(5-0) earned the win by pitching a hitless seventh.

Senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson pitched a perfect inning for his eighth save of the season, third-highest total in program history, and 15^thof his career, the second-highest total in program history and just one shy of the record of 16 held by Tim Haines (2005-06).
 
Texas Tech scored single runs in the third on an RBI-double by Dylan Neuse, the fourth on an RBI-groundout by Dru Baker, and the sixth innings on an RBI-groundout by Cole Stilwell.
 
UTRGV and Texas Tech wrap up this two-game series on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
