EDINBURG – Senior
Trevelle Hill scattered four singles over a career-high tying eight innings to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Chicago State University (CSU) on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (19-10, 5-2 WAC) has now won four in a row.
Hill (5-1) struck out five while walking three. The only run was unearned and came on a first inning sacrifice fly by
Matt Sullivan.
UTRGV tied the game in the second on an error.
In the third, UTRGV loaded the bases with nobody out against
Brett Gregory (1-5), setting up a go-ahead single by junior
Christian Sepulveda. Two outs later, junior
Nick Contreras hit a two-run single, and then sophomore Mercedes alum
Oliver Closner IV and freshman
Jacob Flores walked to force-in a run and give UTRGV a 5-1 lead.
That was it until the eighth, when junior
Coleman Grubbs hit a two-run home run and junior
Tyler Torres added an RBI-single.
Grubbs recorded his second three-hit game of the season, driving in a career-high tying two runs and scoring a season-high tying two runs. Torres finished 2-for-5. Sophomore
Jacob Hirsh went 2-for-6 with a run scored. Junior
Elijah Alexander walked twice and scored twice.
Reggie Brock Jr. had two of CSU's (7-20, 2-5 WAC) five hits, going 2-for-3.
UTRGV and Chicago State play the middle game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. during Selena Night. Fans can look forward to an evening filled with Selena music, videos, contests, trivia, and more. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a special Selena magnet that celebrates her legacy. Gates open at 5.
