EDINBURG – Junior
Tyler Torres hit a walk-off single in the ninth to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team past Chicago State University (CSU) 5-4 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (20-10, 6-2 WAC) has now won five in a row.
Torres came up with the bases loaded three times, driving in a run each time. In the ninth, he singled off
Yunis Halim (2-1) over drawn-in shortstop
Gabriel Cobrun to end the game.
That made a winner of sophomore
Max Balderrama Jr. (3-0), who pitched a season-high 3.2 hitless innings of relief, striking out five.
Torres drew bases-loaded walks in the first and third innings to finish with a career-high tying three RBI. UTRGV also scored on an error in the third and a double by junior
Christian Sepulveda in the fifth.
Sepulveda finished 2-for-3. Junior
Coleman Grubbs went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior
Conrado Diaz finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
CSU (7-21, 2-6 WAC) scored in the third on a
James Rosenhagen double, the fifth on a two-run single by
Daulton Ryans, and the sixth on a
Patrick Arndt single.
UTRGV and Chicago State wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to start at 12 but has been delayed due to morning thunderstorms. The game features the Strike Out Hunger promotion. Fans donating five non-perishable food items at every Sunday home game receive free general admission. Donations benefit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
