CHICAGO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team fell to Kansas City 2-5 on Friday at the Chicago State Tennis Courts.
UTRGV (5-11, 2-2 WAC) got off to a good start, sweeping through doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Freshmen
Sandra Putz and
Katarina Sasaroga made quick work of
Katie Fries and
Thanushree Vale, winning 6-1 on court three. Senior
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra were right behind with a 6-2 victory over
Michela Xibilia and
Yana Grechkina on court one while seniors
Michelle Walker and
Doris Aleksovska won 6-3 over
Grace Ball and
Riddhi Sharma on court two.
UTRGV's lone singles win came on court one as Ibarra won her 11
th-straight match, extending her program-record career total to 113 wins, by beating Xibilia 6-1, 6-1. Ibarra now has 62-career singles wins and 51-career doubles wins, both of which are the third-highest totals in program history.
Aleksovska won the first set on court four 6-3 over Sharma and Putz took the first set from Vale on court six 7-6, but both Sharma and Vale came back for three-set victories. Kansas City (6-11, 1-2 WAC) won on the remaining courts in straight-sets.
UTRGV closes out Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Grand Canyon.
