EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics clinched its first South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union Championship when the women's track & field team beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV wins the showdown by a final score of 33.5-to-27.5.
UTRGV will receive the showdown trophy during a special pregame ceremony at the baseball game against Corpus Christi on May 14 at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
At this meet, the women won by a score of 95.5-to-70.5 while the men lost 98-to-72. UTRGV won 17 of the 34 events.
Junior
Ashley Hughes led the way on the track by breaking the program record for the 400-meter dash for the second time this season, clocking in at 54.35 meters despite windy conditions. That race was one of two wins for Hughes, who teamed with senior
Felicia Wills, freshman
Kyra Keurentjes and senior
Destiny Rutherford to win the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:50.37, the fifth-best in program history. Earlier in the meet, Wills recorded the second-best 100-meter hurdles performance in program history with a time of 14.46.
Senior
Diamond Thomas dominated on the field, winning the shot put, discus and hammer throws. Her 14.92-meter mark in the shot put is the second-best in program history while her 50.60-meter discus throw is the third-best. Freshman
Samariae Bonds recorded the fourth-best shot put in program history at 14.63 meters while sophomore
Alexandrea Hurst came in with the seventh-best throw, 14.45 meters.
On the jumping runway, senior
Dai'ja Coleman won the triple jump with a distance of 12.26 meters, the fifth-best in program history.
Three men's performances entered the program record books as well, as senior
Dimitris Levantinos recorded the fourth-best 110-meter hurdles (14.71), freshman Weslaco alum
Jon Zapata posted the fifth-best pole vault (4.45 meters), and the team of sophomore
Ronnie Ollivierre, freshman
Yashawn Hamilton, freshman
Maxime Gardes, freshman Economedes alum
Kyle Marroquin recorded the sixth-best 4x100-meter relay time (42.54).
UTRGV is back in action Friday and Saturday at the UIW Invitational.
